Dolna Łužyca - the name of a living culture

Sorbs/Wends have lived in Lusatia for around 1,500 years. Brandenburg officially uses the dual term Sorben/Wenden; Lower Sorbian belongs to the Slavic language family and is a recognised minority language in Germany. In Lower Lusatia, “Wends” has its own living tradition of identity, so the term is not automatically replaced by “Sorbs”.

The heritage is visible in bilingual place names, field and water names, songs, costumes, customs and storytelling. Present-day language protection is not simply a historical add-on; it continues through schools, culture, signage and municipal decisions.

Terminology. The archaeological “Lusatian culture” of the Bronze and early Iron Ages is a different and much older concept. It must not automatically be equated with later Sorbian populations.

Eastern Lower Lusatia

The modern state frontier does not erase older layers of names and culture. Fundacja Rokita therefore places German and Polish names side by side and, where sources justify it, also uses Lower Sorbian forms.
